Eutelsat Hits 1000 Channels, Achieves 30 %Growth

HIGH Definition TV continues to gain ground across the broadcast satellites operated by Eutelsat Communications with the 240 HD channels launched in 2016 equalling the total number launched during the previous two years.

The symbolic landmark of 1,000 channels was crossed this month with the launch at Eutelsat’s HOTBIRD neighbourhood of CGTN HD, the news and current affairs channel of China’s CCTV media organisation, marking its first foray into HDTV in Europe.

According to the company, Eutelsat’s key video neighbourhoods all saw HD growth in 2016, with three distinguished for exclusive content and market leadership.

The press statement from Eutelsat said that the upwards curve of HD take-up was particularly strong at Eutelsat’s flagship HOTBIRD position where HD channels increased by 25% to 250, now accounting for almost one in four channels in the HOTBIRD line-up.

The company revealed that this dynamic is driven by three key trends which are the progressive HD adoption by public broadcasters including RAI that has transitioned nine channels to HD and CCTV that launched three channels as well as the new premium pay-TV content in flagship platforms including Sky Italia, Polsat, nc+ and Nova.

Eutelsat  added that its success was also driven by a wave of new free-to-air channels that include Euronews HD and Al Jazeera English adding that Eutelsat 7/8° West position sets the trend in Middle East, North Africa and features exclusive HD channels.

With almost 150 HD channels (up 40% in one year), of which 100 are exclusive, the 7/8° West position hosted by Eutelsat and Nilesat satellites leads the transition to HD in the Middle East and North Africa.

Free-to-air channels in HD now outnumber pay, with strong brands launched exclusively at this neighbourhood including five channels launched by Kuwait TV and Echourouk News HD, the 24/7 Algerian news channel.

Eutelsat satellites at 36° East that serve Russian and African markets clocked 14 additional HD channels over the last 12 months, rising to 114 HD channels.

Russia’s leading NTV+ and Tricolor platforms each broadcast around 40 channels, to which can be added 32 HD channels broadcast to homes in Siberia from 56° East. In Africa, MultiChoice Africa and Zap are in the vanguard of HD, broadcasting 16 and 17 channels respectively and underscoring the trend towards higher resolution in Africa’s TV market.

Commenting on the development, Commercial and Development Director at Eutelsat Michel Azibert, said: “2016 marked a tipping point for High Definition TV across our portfolio of video neighbourhoods, culminating in a new landmarkof 1,000 channels, many of which are exclusive to Eutelsat.”

He said that Eutelsat is  fully equipped to accommodate this accelerating pace and to work closely with broadcasters as they transition to an enhanced viewing experience.

ICT & Insurance Experts Set for Maiden Convergence Conference

INFORMATION and Communications Technology (ICT) stakeholders in Nigeria are set to dialogue with their counterpart in the insurance industry to generate ideas on how to use ICT to drive insurance penetration in Nigeria and develop appropriate framework for implementing such ideas.

The ICT and Insurance experts will on March 23, gather at the Lagos
Sheraton Hotel for an E-Insurance Conference with the theme: "Driving
Insurance Penetration with Information and Communication Technologies".

The conference is expected to bring together corporate organisations,
ICT experts, insurance experts, academia, consumers of insurance products and regulators of both ICT and Insurance industries, to discuss how to use technology to deepen insurance penetration in Nigeria.

The conference, the first of its kind in the country, is been organised by Pinet Informatics Limited, the first Internet Service Provider in Nigeria, in collaboration with major stakeholders in Insurance and ICT industries.

Managing Director of Pinet Informatics, Engr. Lanre Ajayi, explained that the  event  will  bring together  practitioners in the insurance industry and that of Information  and Communication Technology  to  share  experience,  brainstorm,  network, and conclude deals.

According to Ajayi, the Insurance industry is a vital part of
the  Nigerian  economy  but  the  industry  is  not  living  up  to  its
full potential saying, "there  are  less  than 1.5 million insurance policy holders in Nigeria out of a population of 170 million,  which translates to 0.9 per cent insurance penetration."
When compared to 23 per cent bank accounts penetration, 105 per cent of telephone penetration and 55 per cent of Internet penetration, then, there  is  a lot of  room  for  improvement in the insurance industry and this could be achieved by deploying the right technology, Ajayi said.

"The Nigeria insurance industry can be turned around if the industry transit to a technology driven one, the same way the banking industry got transformed through the infusion of information and communication technology in its service delivery processes," he said.

Ajayi who is the former President of Association of Telecommunication
Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), said after the conference, there would be one week training workshop on e-Insurance for staff of insurance companies.
