Ericsson Releases Browser for Free Download

THE newly developed internet browser from Ericsson Research has finally been made public for users to download for free at the Apple Store.
Known as Bowser, Ericsson said in a statement that the reason for making the Bowser and the underlying framework OpenWebRTC as free and open source is to further quicken the pace of innovation in the WebRTC community by providing developers with more choice and flexibility.
The statement said that WebRTC provides a very simple way to build real-time voice, video and data applications adding that it consists of a set of API's and protocols that are being standardized within the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
According to Ericsson, the OpenWebRTC is built on the belief that the WebRTC standard will transcend the pure browser environment and that native apps implementing the same protocols and API's, will become an important part of the WebRTC ecosystem.
It said that this is especially true on mobile platforms where native app distribution is often preferred over pure web apps.
Commenting on the development, Research Manager at Ericsson Research Stefan Ålund,  said: “Ever since releasing Bowser to the public in 2012 we have been asked to share our implementation. Today, we are not only releasing Bowser but also the underlying cross-platform WebRTC framework that we have developed and used internally at Ericsson Research over the last few years. ”
Ericsson Research is heavily involved in the standardization of WebRTC, and has been developing prototype implementations of the standard ever since its inception.
Having at least two independent, interoperable implementations of a standard is that both IETF and W3C requires as part of the standards process.

Ålund continues: “The WebRTC standard is still evolving and developers are finding new ways of using the technology every day. Our engineers have built OpenWebRTC in a way that makes it super-simple to modify and extend, leaving room for even more experimentation with API’s and new features.”

SAMSUNG is a market leader in the industry in so many ways because it makes a lot of investment in research and development.
Director of Information Technology & Mobile for Samsung Electronics West Africa, Mr. Emmanouil Revmatas who made remark in an interview with National Mirror in Lagos shortly after the public launch of its Galaxy Note 4 mobile phone said that a lot of financial and human resources are invested yearly in South Korea to bring out the devices and electronics that the brand introduces into the global market.
According to him, that explains the reason why Samsung has become the most innovative in many technologies in the industry saying whether it is in touch, camera or S Pen technology.
He said that Samsung is good in anticipating the future by introducing technology that solves the problem adding we are ready at all time to make the investment not minding whether such will succeed or fail.
“Samsung always cascade its development all the way down to Nigeria, so on an annual basis our team movie around from countries to countries including Nigeria and go into the market talking to customers, dealers, distributors and traders trying to understand what is the current trend in the needs of customers and of business people. They gather their insights and those insights really form the basis of the future direction of devices”, he said.
So they understand the need and it is made but also for global market. But in many cases, they become products that have been specifically designed for various markets and the Galaxy Grand for example has been a very great success in Nigeria, a very fantastic for us because it meets the need of the Nigerian consumers. Telecoms Executives Tackle NCC Over Lingering Industry Issues

At the 2014 Telecoms Executive Forum organised annually by the Association of the Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), top executives of telecos tackled the head of the Nigerian Communications Commission NCC over lingering industry issues but he seems not to agree with some issues raised by the telecos executives writes Isaiah Erhiawarien.

There was a mixed reaction recently at the annual Telecoms Executive Forum organised by the Association of the Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) as telecos and mobile telephone services operators made frantic efforts to get the industry regulator, Nigerian Communications Commission to address grey areas that they consider unfriendly to the business environment.
Tagged: Telecoms Executive and Regulator 2014, the forum was cleverly designed to address issues that have repeatedly formed subject of discussion among stakeholders and executive chat among top echelons of the industry during their private discussions.
Although there were other issues penciled down for discussion
according to the President of ATCON, Engr. Lanre Ajayi in his opening remark, what however got the fancy of the executives present  were the issues of Infraco juxtapose the Open Access Model, the unending cry over local content and the grievances of stakeholders over the spectrum license auction.
Panel discussions were therefore setup to discuss each of the issues while the participants were later allowed to ask questions which the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Eugene Juwah who beat all odds to be personally available at the Forum was required to respond to.
Juwah had earlier in his keynote address to the telecos executive described the event as very crucial to the growth of the industry thereby giving the participants the leeway to bare their minds on all issues.
The first panel of discussion, which was on corporate governance in the industry, was chaired by the Country Manager, Ceregon Network, Mr. Tadesse Bekele.
Bekele in his opening remarks expressed optimism that about the essence of the forum saying that it is an opportunity for the telecoms executive to rub minds with the leadership of the NCC adding that if the proposed Infraco is properly executed it will fulfilled the broadband policy objectives of the Federal Government.
At the end of each panel discussion, through which the panelist dwell  on issues of concerning the proposed Infraco, Spectrum allocation, corporate governance as well as the open model access and the participants were allowed to ask questions and comment issues raised by the panelist.
Responding to one of the question that relates to competence, Juwah observed that although he does not work for the operator yet his experience as the EVC has showed that there is a lot of display of incompetence on the side of most of the Nigerian companies.
According to him, some companies are good in executing projects but some well known Nigerian companies believe they can collect money and not deliver on the project adding that the issue became so bad that it had to be reported to security agencies.
He said that was done to avoid a situation where people will think that it is the NCC that embezzled the money saying that “when we are clamouring to do a project we must executive them. We are a government department, if we give you a project you must do it and if you do not do it we will not pay you.”
He said there is still a lot of lack of incompetence in the industry noting that telecos and operators should “develop a culture of completing projects and not just to collect money and run away.”
On the need for the NCC to intervene for the industry to be able to generate employment by limiting the effect of capitalisation on the growth of Nigerian- owned telecos, he said there are clear facts that the industry is not well capitalised stressing that that was reason for the collapse of the CDMA sector.
According to him, they all borrowed a lot of money from the banks and they were unable to pay back stating that that is why the industry needs foreigners to bring in companies that are well capitalised to do the major work while Nigerian companies ride on their infrastructure.
He however, observed that Nigerians are currently winners in wholesale license and service provision license saying that “in our restructuring of the value added services we hope that a lot of Nigerians who are creative and innovative can create applications that can ride on the facilities of the incumbent service providers under strict regulations.”
On the need for local companies to partner with foreign telecos, he said, “if you read our catalogue for on the Infraco license it connotes that a partnership with a Nigerian company is necessary. You cannot do these things without having a Nigerian company.”
He said that to take part in such a complicated bid partnership with a Nigerian company is needed adding however that the law of Nigeria permits hundred percent ownership saying that it is an issue that is political apart from being social-economic.
While calling on ATCON to raise the issue with the appropriate authority he said there are very few foreigners in the industry.
He explained that as big as MTN is today, it is managed by Nigerians saying that “there are very few foreigners and you cannot rule out zero level presence of foreigners but the fact remains that most telecos are owned by Nigerians.”
He said further that the issue of labour in the industry does not fall under purvey of the NCC saying that Ministry of Labour and Productivity is responsible for that and that the NCC will follow the NCC Act to the latter.
In his responds to the EVC, President of ATCON noted that the agitations of local telecos is that what has been done in the oil and gas industry should be replicated in the telecoms industry saying that the telecos wants grant from government so that they can manufacture most of the hardware of the industry in Nigeria thereby creating jobs for the citizens.
Similarly, Director of Regulatory Affairs, Vodacom, Mrs. Nkechi Newton-Denila said that the demand for Spectrum was as result of the demand for wireless connection and the discussion around it noting that when discussion began at NCC forum, focus seems to be on releasing more spectrum into the market and making national transmission available.
She noted that what the NCC needs to look at was the existing spectrum that has been assigned to operators explaining that “this is a scarce resource, and each time there is a new spectrum opened it can only go to a few parties. And what should happen is that there should actually be a holistic view in terms of how we can provide and ensure effective utilisation of spectrum that will enable users to have access to broadband and proper quality services as well as very good prices especially at the hinterland.”
According to her, “the only way that can happened is if the NCC makes a commitment to provide incentives” saying that “in the last eight years we have been paying the same thing for spectrum, which takes large chunk of the cost of sales.”
She added, “Even that cost is not added when you are calculating the cost of sales and bandwidth charges noting that “for smaller companies like us that is quite a lot of money. If we have to be sustained in the market that is a double problem.”
Newton-Denila while calling the NCC to review the cost of spectrum said that the effort of providing more spectrum to increase access to broadband at a low price will not be complete if the price of the spectrum allocation is high noting that in the last two years the cost of international capacity has come down to about 150 per cent because the international market is responding to the forces of supply.
She said further that since spectrum is scarce, the only way for prices to come down is only if there is a decision from the government that here is what we are giving to support the operators to make the prices of broadband to land at the end user point at a reasonable price.
She urged the NCC to show commitment to bring down the prices of spectrum saying that not having a revision at all for the past eight years is not good for the industry survival and the objectives of the national broadband policy initiated by the current leadership of the Ministry of Communications Technology and with full support of the Federal Government.
But the EVC of the NCC in his response said that auctioning is not compulsory for those who think they cannot afford it saying that nobody is forcing anyone to pay for it.
According to him, “you pay what you feel is the value of the spectrum and that is why we auction 2.3GHz. We are going to auction 2.7GHz soon. Prices have been the same in the last eight years. In fact there is no prices that has remained the same in the last eight years, prices have increased but we are not planning to increase price otherwise there would be uproar in the industry.”
Juwah told the telecoms executive that telecoms is not for small players saying that you must get ready and be capable unless there is no way you can compete.

MTN Backs Ebola Fight with Medical Equipment Donates

LAGOS State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has commended Nigeria's leading Information and Communication Technology Company, MTN, for its public spirited gesture, which he said is a tradition associated with the MTN brand, especially in matters of Education and Health.  Governor Fashola stated this while receiving Personal Protective Equipment for healthcare workers and caregivers, donated by MTN Foundation in support of Lagos State's effort a
t containing the spread of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease.

The donation was made under the MTN Foundation's Community Support Project, which lends a helping hand to communities through infrastructure upgrade such as the provision of water boreholes, transformers etc for the benefit of people.  The presentation of personal protective equipment was a response by the Foundation in support of the systematic and professional approach of the Lagos State Health Team in curbing the Ebola scourge.

Governor Fashola lauded MTN's Private-Public Partnership model, which has seen the Foundation partner with government and other stakeholders in responding to different challenges in times of need, especially given the current health challenge faced by the country. "We are indeed grateful to MTN as it has been a tradition of theirs especially in matters of health and education. We also appreciate the health workers who in spite of the fear, worked tirelessly to bring the situation under manageable control. As much as we appreciate MTN's gesture, we want to reiterate that the real challenge is human capacity, that is, the insufficiency of virologists and Ebola management experts," said the Lagos State helmsman.

Shedding more light on the presentation, Chairman, MTN Nigeria, Dr. Pascal Dozie, said the gesture was in support of all that the Lagos State government had done to contain the spread of the Ebola virus since it was first discovered.

"MTN recognises the importance of collective effort and the role of the private sector in containing the spread and the impact of the disease and we take very seriously, our responsibility to provide a service that is essential in a period of national emergency as we have found ourselves. This is why we are making this donation of personal protective equipment to supplement measures to protect our frontline health workers and caregivers," he stated.

"We have also activated a 24-hour, 7-day a week help-line in conjunction with our call centers management partners where customers can get basic information on Ebola, with support from the Lagos State Ministry of Health, through the office of the Special Assistant on Public Health to the State Governor. On a  national scale, we have partnered with the Federal Ministry of Health to launch a public awareness campaign via SMS to educate our 58 million subscribers about the Ebola virus," concludes Dozie

The items provided for caregivers by the Foundation include: Elbow length gloves; Level Four overalls with hood, knee booths, goggles, medical masks, anti-viral sanitizers, rubber aprons, respirators and bags of hair-nets for female health workers. For the frontline health workers, the items include elbow length gloves, medical masks, anti-viral sanitizers, level three overalls with hood; rubber aprons and thermal scanners.

Akinwale Goodluck, Corporate Services Executive of MTN Nigeria, said: "At MTN, we believe in making positive impact in the lives of everybody and in this current health challenge, the frontline health workers and caregivers, who are the most vulnerable at the moment, are a great concern to us, which is why we have stepped in to contribute our own quota. Providing the Personal Protective Equipment to protecting our frontline health workers and caregivers as well as continuously educating millions of our subscribers via SMS in English and our local languages and phone call, is a demonstration of our promise to continue to touch more lives, everywhere we go."

“Glo Xchange, A Major Boost To Nigerian Economy”

Group CEO,IHS Holding Limited, Issam Darwish;Chief Executive Officer,
MTN Nigeria, Michael Ikpoki and Corporate Services Executive, MTN
Nigeria, Akinwale Goodluck at the MOU signing ceremony between MTN
Nigeria and IHS Holding Limited over the outsourcing of MTN Nigeria's
mobile network towers.
TWO of Nigeria’s foremost financial analysts have applauded Nigeria’s biggest Mobile Money Agent Network, Glo Xchange, recently launched by Globacom, the country’s national telecom carrier.

Glo Xchange was launched in partnership with four mobile money operators, FirstMonie, Stanbic IBTC, Ecobank and Zenith Bank.

Renowned financial consultant and Chief Executive Officer of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Bismarck Rewane and macroeconomics expert and CEO of Economic Associates, Dr. Ayo Teriba, who spoke at the formal launch of Glo Xchange in Lagos, described the initiative as a direly needed ingredient for accelerating mobile money explosion in Nigeria.

Rewane said the initiative is consistent with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s policy thrust of developing and sustaining an efficient payment system that will drive an increase in the velocity of money and consequently, stimulate economic growth.

He described Nigeria as a mineral-rich and commodity-dependent economy with a nominal GDP of $510bn. According to him, it is 12 times the size of Kenya’s economy which has profited massively from mobile money service. He said Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa and the 26th largest in the world.

Rewane said, however, that the economy is largely cash-based, a situation which he said constitutes a barrier to rapid growth. He said therefore that, initiatives such as Glo Xchange that help to enhance the cashless policy of the CBN, or that help to improve the velocity of money is bound to have a resounding positive impact on economic growth.

Expatiating further, Rewane said the potential GDP growth rate in Nigeria is 11 percent, whereas the actual GDP growth rate as discerned from the rebasing exercise recently carried out by the Federal Government is six percent. He said since people don’t live on potential but actuals, it is of utmost importance to implement policies that will help Nigeria to actualize the potential growth rate.

One veritable way of achieving this, he said, is to capture the money lying outside the formal sector. According to him, over 46 per cent of Nigerian adults currently have no access to financial services.

He said Mobile money is a strong tool for financial inclusion of this huge category of Nigerians, stressing that initiatives such as Glo Xchange, which will help with the acceleration of mobile money service is therefore highly commendable.

He added that Glo Xchange will contribute to the efficiency of Nigeria’s payment systems, lead to more efficient transactions and open a floodgate of opportunities for a lot of stakeholders from the top to the bottom of the mobile money value chain.

Dr. Teriba on his part noted that while Mobile Money service has been in Nigeria for over three years, it has failed to grow as expected because of certain reasons, including lack of an efficient and expansive agent network.

“Usually for such a service as mobile money, the bigger the network, the higher the chances of an explosion, and by extension, the bigger the benefits accruable to all the stakeholders, from the banks down to the customers,” he said.

He added that Glo Xchange, with the nationwide network of agents as unveiled by Globacom, is just the ingredient the industry has been waiting for.

He noted that the potential for growth for the initiative is immense as the platform is open to other banks to plug into. He implored Nigerians looking for employment opportunities to see the avenues created by the initiative and utilize them for self-enhancement.

While launching the platform in Lagos on Thursday, Globacom's Head of Corporate Sales, Mr. Kamal Shonibare said Glo Xchange is a fast, secured and convenient platform designed to enable Nigerians use their mobile phones to send or receive money and pay for their goods and services in any part of the country without physically carrying cash through the Glo Xchange agents.

He said Globacom is investing in a robust nationwide mobile money agent network that will propel the success of Glo Xchange. The network includes 150 GloWorld and GloZone shops, over 35,000 Glo Dealer and sub dealer outlets, over 400 Conoil filling stations across the country and the outlets of over 7,000 members of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria. This will be strongly complemented by the branches of all the partner banks.

Four licensed mobile money operators including Ecobank, Firstmonie, Stanbic IBTC Bank and Zenith Bank have partnered with Globacom on Glo Xchange, while other financial institutions are on the verge of joining the platform.

Globacom said it aims to recruit over 500,000 Mobile Money Agents within the next 5 to 6 years who will earn excellent commission monthly on sales. The recruitment of the agents has already started.

"With as little as N20,000, you too can become a Glo Xchange Agent. Just Pick up your phone and SMS your First name/Last name/City/State to 33003 or 08150033003 Or visit  www.Gloworld.com/Mobilemoney", said Shonibare.
